Connecticut Manufacturer Showcases Battery Technology Leadership at National Industry Event

Every October, the International Trade Administration, the U.S. government, and manufacturing industry leaders join forces to celebrate National Manufacturing Month and the importance of American manufacturing innovation to our fast-paced society.

PACT

One Connecticut manufacturer of a patented fire-suppressant product line designed to extinguish lethal battery fires will illuminate the largest industry event in North America. Specifically, Packaging and Crating Technologies (PACT®) in Watertown, Conn. will present its newest solutions against lithium-ion battery fires – TR Envelope™ and PACT Lion-X™- at The Battery Show in Detroit, Michigan from October 12-15, 2026. The annual convention is the only gathering geared to both battery and EV tech companies.

"As of early 2026, lithium-ion battery fires are on the rise among E-mobility, micromobility and handheld electronics, causing frequent incidents on land, sea and in the air," said Rodger Mort, chief operating officer at Packaging And Crating Technologies. "These fires are nearly impossible to extinguish and must smolder out on their own after burning for many hours and days, all while emitting lethal fumes and gases. Our proven innovations are critical safety solutions for first responders and the general public from a major catastrophic event."

Mort notes that what makes these volatile batteries so dangerous is a process called thermal runaway in which the lithium-ion battery cell enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state caused by high temperatures, shaking or puncturing.   Thermal runaway can result in the ejection of toxic gas, shrapnel and particulates, as well as smoke and fire, which can cause death to humans and destruction to the environment

Each year, the Battery Show attracts 19,000+ engineers, business leaders, and innovative thinkers across the automotive, medical and aerospace industries to its national forum. According to organizers, "the battery and EV industry is moving faster than ever and staying ahead means having the right knowledge, the right connections, and the right strategies. The Battery Show Detroit 2026 delivers all three!"

Mort explains that the prolific growth of devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters, vapes, handheld electronics and power banks all rely on lithium-ion batteries, and many incidents involve low-quality or modified batteries made overseas that lack safety certification.  Exacerbating the problem is improper charging habits, like overnight charging, incompatible chargers, or damaged batteries increase the risk of fires, as do home charging setups in enclosed garages and apartments. Lastly, Mort recognizes that metropolitan areas with dense populations, battery storage facilities and most recently, airplanes can cause fires to spread quickly and are more difficult to contain.

"We are proud to have developed these innovative safety containment solutions that help protect property and human lives from dangerous and deadly lithium battery fires", adds Mort. "We believe they will become critical gamechangers as lithium battery usage continues to grow worldwide and new micromobility products emerge in the marketplace."
